Magnolia Mist is a 25-acre certified organic farm situated in one of the greenest parts of Coorg, with our annual rainfall being approximately 200 inches (5080 mm). Nearly 80% of this comes in the span of 3-4 months of the south-west monsoon, thus making agriculture a real challenge—to find a balance between bringing back the forest while also practicing sustainable agriculture. Thus, we grow tea, coffee, spices, rice and a wide range of fruits and vegetables in an effort to conserve and protect the incredible biodiversity that we are privileged to share this land with.
A common practice in coffee estates in the region is to prune trees to allow for light for agriculture below. We rarely prune the trees in the estate; so there is minimal impact on local wildlife. Due to this—and the high rainfall—our estate’s yields are 10-15 times less than of an average plantation. We rather share this wonderful place with all living beings—big or small, than cut away at the forest to make bigger profits.
Our little tea estate is very different from the typical rolling hills of tea monoculture that we are accustomed to seeing.
We have patches of shola forest (that are full of amazing orchids) and grassland, which we share with many wild animals—like porcupines, hares, jungle cats and wild dogs—to name a few.
The tea is hand-picked, hand pound and processed in our little tea processing unit. We produce both green and black tea.
Our coffee grows as an understory to native rainforest trees. Every year in December–February when the coffee beans are red and ripe, we hand pick them. These are then sun-dried, segregated and stored.
In order to maintain the freshness, as and when we get your order, the dried beans are hulled, roasted, ground and packed, all in our own small processing unit.
Anyone interested to learn about the journey of a coffee bean from plant to cup is welcome to visit our processing unit. We produce both varieties—Arabica and Robusta. Depending upon our clients' preference, we can make different blends.
Pepper is a climbing flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, known as a peppercorn.
Costus is a plant that grows wild on our land, and is known for its health benefits for diabetes patients—which is why, it is sometimes referred to as ‘insulin plant’.
